Rico Writes: Collection 1

April 4, 2018

“Now keep in mind that I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit.” -Badu

April is National Poetry Month and we've decided to draw more attention to the poets, both the heard and the unheard. Putting one’s work out into the world can be daunting, but that doesn’t negate the fact that our works deserve to be appreciated.

Each Tuesday in April we'll be releasing a new collection of poetry by YOU. Submissions can be anonymous but we encourage you to put your name on your work so we can show love! Submissions can be made here.

Reap What You Sow

Cries for help

Cries to see you

To hear you

To feel you

To speak to you first

To listen with full intent when interacting

You showed all the signs but I was too busy losing you in the white paint on the white wall to pay any attention

I didn't give you what you needed

However, I gave you screams when you tried to share laughter

I walked away when you just needed me to stop, needed me to understand

I gave you embarrassment when you were desperately searching for comfort

I had the nerve to let go when the table was turned

How can I be upset any good between us drowned when I'm the one that held it under water

Pain

Pain is what you feel when that's all you favor

You reap what you sow

A song I can't sing

If I could write you a song to make you fall in love. … you'd still be where you're at because I'm a terrible singer.

i could never stand in front of you sing something so eloquent, so perfect for you to understand how much i value you.

i could never stand in front of you and sing a song describing
how beautiful you are and not just  aesthetically but as a person.

i could never sing a song that you listen to at 2 am while doing homework to make you think of the times we’ve had.

i could never stand in front of you and sing a song  that says i miss you with a chorus that says I’m sorry and a melody that says give me a 10th chance and i wouldn’t  blow it.

i could never stand in front of you and sing a song because i can’t stand in front of you..

and face you.

Face what I’ve done and mistakes I’ve made.

so if i could write you a song to make you fall in love. you’d still be where your at… and there's many reasons but to help me sleep at night I’m gonna say its because I’m a terrible singer.

If i could write you a song to make you fall in love…you’d still be where you’re at.  and that's probably the best place for you.

I must be crazy.
I do not believe in marriage
I do not believe in religion
I feel contradicted
No matter what decision
I come to
It’s crazy what funds do
Especially when you don’t have it
I remember the days couldnt
wait till I’m older
I wonder.
If it’s cold
And a homeless man asks , would you give him your jacket?

Or the cold shoulder?
When he asks you for some change
Why do you tell him you don’t have it?
Morals rearranged
Why are you acting like you don’t have it?
But when you do, do you feel like a saint?
Why do you act like something
that you know that you ain’t?
Are your intentions pure?
You sure?
If you had more, would you give more?
Man, who are you?
I sometimes feel it’s such a chore
To search for answers you’ll never get the answers to
Just promise me one thing
Promise me you’ll never lose yourself in your mind
You ain’t crazy
Just another soul searching to find
Yourself
If I’m crazy,
Well...So is everyone else

Kinetic Hands

Your weary hands pulled away from mine

I wanted to caress your fears

To whisper to your inhibitions

That you are powerful

Timidity lined your jaw

You tensed at the sight of warmth

Never had you been touched like this

Never had you heard the call to morning prayer

Love was too far off shore

Affection had no intention to arrive

We tussled in the sand

Unable to find common ground

Veins in your hand pulsating with frustration

Morning dew masked the tears on your face

You quietly looked out to the horizon and

Slid your hand into my palm
